What are the SSAT, SHSAT, ISEE, CHSEE & TACHS?
SSAT
The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is a standardized test used by admission officers to assess the abilities of students seeking to enroll in an independent school. It measures basic verbal, math and reading skills students need for successful performance in independent schools. It’s an indispensable tool that gives admission professionals an equitable means to assess and compare applicants, regardless of their background or experience. Your SSAT score is just one part of your complete application to an independent school.
The Standard SSAT is given on eight designated Saturdays during the academic year at test sites around the world. There are 3 levels to the SSAT: Elementary Level, Middle Level, and Upper Level.
SHSAT
SHSAT stands for the Specialized High School Admissions Test and is offered for residents of New York City who would like to apply for New York City Specialized High Schools. These schools include: The Bronx High School of Science, Brooklyn Latin School, Brooklyn Technical High School, High School for Math, Science and Engineering at City College, High School of American Studies at Lehman College, Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, Staten Island Technical High School, and Stuyvesant High School.
ISEE
The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is a standard assessment of skills for each applicant, ranking his or her reasoning and achievement skills among students in the same grade. It enables students to take a single, fair, and reliable test for entrance into top-performing independent schools. The ISEE is used by consortia throughout the U.S. and internationally, and for the City of Boston’s Exam Schools. It is the most advanced admission test available for independent schools.
The ISEE is offered for four levels: Primary (students entering grades 2-4; Lower (students entering grades 5-6); (students entering grades 7-8); and Upper (students entering grades 9-12). Primary assessments are available online only, and the remaining levels are offered both online and in pencil/paper settings. The exam can be given on-demand.
CHSEE & TACHS
The Catholic High School Entrance Exam (CHSEE) gives some objective data about eighth-grade students who are applying to Catholic High School. The Catholic High schools on Long Island use the examination results to make decisions about applicants. Many schools also use the information for grouping and tracking of ninth-grade students. This test is only for eighth-grade students seeking entrance into a Catholic high school in ninth-grade. Other transfer students should contact the school(s) of their choice for admission procedures.
