When planning for college, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is often the first step families take to secure financial aid. However, if you’re applying to certain private colleges or universities, you may also encounter the CSS Profile—a more detailed financial aid application managed by the College Board.
What Is the CSS Profile?
The CSS Profile, short for the College Scholarship Service Profile, is an online application that allows students to apply for non-federal financial aid from colleges, universities, and scholarship programs. Administered by the College Board, it provides schools with a comprehensive picture of your family’s financial situation.
While the FAFSA primarily determines eligibility for federal aid, the CSS Profile is used by many private institutions to allocate their own institutional funds, such as grants, scholarships, and loans.
How to Complete It?
Follow these steps to ensure a smooth CSS Profile application process:
- Create a College Board Account
If you’ve taken the SAT or AP exams, you likely already have a College Board account. Log in or create one at CSS Profile. - Gather Financial Documents
Have the following documents on hand:- Recent tax returns (for both parents if applicable)
- W-2 forms and other income statements
- Bank statements
- Mortgage and real estate information
- Start Early
Complete the application as soon as possible after it becomes available (October 1) and well before the earliest deadline listed by your colleges. - Double-Check School Requirements
Each institution has its own deadline and specific requirements for the CSS Profile. Check your schools’ financial aid websites for details. - Submit and Pay the Fee
After completing the form, you’ll be prompted to pay the fee or request a waiver if eligible. It is $25 for the initial application and every additional institution added is an extra $16.- Student is eligible for fee waiver if:
- Family adjusted gross income is up to $100,000
- The student qualified for an SAT fee waiver
- The student is an orphan or ward of the court under the age of 24
- Student is eligible for fee waiver if:
- Follow Up with Schools
Some colleges may request additional documents, such as non-custodial parent forms or verification statements. Be proactive in meeting these requests.
