Flushing High School Takes a New Approach to SAT Prep
In past years, SAT prep programs at schools like Flushing High often fell short. Poorly run sessions, inconsistent student engagement, and unclear goals led to frustration for both students and educators — and minimal score improvements.
This year, Flushing High School partnered with Curvebreakers to take a different approach.
Over the course of 18 hours of targeted instruction and structured test practice, 26 students participated in the program. The goal was simple: offer students consistent, high-quality preparation with measurable outcomes.
Here’s what happened:
-
Students who completed both the initial and final practice test improved their scores by an average of +90 points overall.
-
Math scores rose by an average of +46 points.
-
English scores improved by +45 points.
-
The median overall improvement was +70 points.
The top 20% of students saw even greater success, increasing their scores by +170 points overall, with standout improvements in English.
Individual growth stories from Flushing students include:
-
Student A gained +200 points, with a near-perfect +190 in Math.
-
Student B also improved by +200 points, including +90 in English.
-
Student C, Student D, and Student E, each saw gains of +100 points or more.
Importantly, the data shows a strong connection between test completion and score increases — students who completed both practice exams saw the greatest improvements.
While past programs lacked structure and consistency, this effort at Flushing High School focused on creating a clear learning path, building confidence through practice, and holding students accountable with performance tracking.
The result? A more focused, effective SAT experience for students who needed it most.
