At East Side High School in Newark, NJ, SAT prep wasn’t just about test scores. Faced with historically low attendance and engagement in test prep programs, especially among English as a New Language (ENL) students, the school set out to make a bold change. The goal? To create an inclusive SAT prep experience that supported all students, regardless of language barriers, and gave college-bound learners in the NJGPA program a real shot at academic success.
In Spring 2025, East Side High launched an ambitious SAT prep initiative. A total of 92 students were enrolled and divided into four classes, each receiving 18 hours of instruction and completing three full-length SAT practice tests. Special focus was placed on outreach to ENL students and those who had never participated in formal prep before.
Equity in Action
By creating SAT prep that welcomed ENL students, targeted college-bound learners in the NJGPA program, and prioritized repeated practice, East Side High demonstrated the power of inclusive education. The data made one thing clear: when students, especially those often overlooked, are given the chance to prepare meaningfully, they rise to the challenge.
Looking Ahead
The success of this initiative sets the stage for expanded prep efforts in future semesters. With continued focus on accessibility, consistency, and culturally responsive instruction, East Side High is paving the way for more students to break barriers, and boost their scores, in the process.
