University of Delaware, often abbreviated as UD, is a public grant research University located in Newark, Delaware. It is the largest university in the state and has satellite campuses in Dover, Wilmington, Lewes, and Georgetown.

The University of Delaware is a privately governed University that receives public funding for grant-based research. UD ranks as one of the top 100 universities in the country and has some of the best programs in physical therapy, chemical engineering, and computer science.

According to the college, the average SAT score ranges from 1260 to 1300, while the average ACT score is between 28 and 30. These scores will need to be higher for students looking to be accepted into the honor program. The average weighted GPA of acceptance is around 3.77 with honors students earning a 3.9, which means that GPA is just as important as the main two standardized tests.

This is reflected in the acceptance rate as it is 67%, meaning that 67 students out of every 100 who apply get in. However, this should not make the impression that it is an easy school to graduate from because the graduation rate is 82%. This may have to do with the fact that many of UD’s top programs are difficult.

If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, it will essentially speak for itself. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn’t be too far off from the school average of 3.77. You can get in based on the merits of your score alone, taking away the pressure of needing extracurriculars and letters of recommendation to get in.
Tips to Get Into UD
- The university allows students to superscore both their SAT and ACT scores. This means that students can take their highest scoring subjects from any test date when the SAT or ACT was taken and add them together to get a super scored standardized test.
- In addition to the SAT and ACT, it is highly recommended that students looking to attend take the writing section of either test and take at least one SAT subject test.
- Make sure to dedicate sufficient time to work on the supplemental essay required by UD. This 400 word essay asks students “Why UD?”
- UD actually rewards students for taking the SAT or ACT multiple times in order to get a better score. This shows resiliency and a willingness to try again even after what may seem like a failure. The target score for the SAT is 1260 while for the ACT it is 28.
How Does UD Compare to Other Top Universities?
UD’s yield rate — the percentage of accepted students who elect to enroll, divided by the total number of students who are admitted — was 72% last year. For comparison, schools like Stanford, Harvard were over 80%, and the University of Chicago, MIT, and Yale all sported 70%+ yield rates.
