NYS TAP – Tuition Assistance Program

New York State (NYS) is home to world-class educational institutions, but for many families, affording college tuition can be a challenge. The New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is a vital resource designed to help eligible New York residents cover tuition costs at approved in-state colleges and universities.

What is NYS TAP?

The Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is a grant program funded by the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation (HESC). Unlike loans, TAP awards do not have to be repaid, making it a valuable resource for students pursuing higher education.

Eligible students may qualify for financial aid ranging from $1,000 to $5,665 per academic year, depending on factors such as income, family size, and the type of school they attend.

Who is Eligible for NYS TAP?

To qualify for TAP, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  1. Residency and Citizenship
    • Be a legal resident of New York State for at least 12 months prior to applying.
    • Be a U.S. citizen or an eligible non-citizen.
  2. Educational Enrollment
    • Attend an approved New York State college, university, or trade school.
    • Be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours per semester in a degree-granting program.
  3. Financial Need

      • For dependent students the combined NYS net taxable income of the family can not exceed $125,000.
      • For independent students without dependents, the income limit is $30,000.
      • For married students with no dependents, the income limit is $60,000
  4. Academic Requirements
    • Maintain satisfactory academic progress as defined by your school.
    • Have either a high school diploma, its equivalent, or have passed an approved ability-to-benefit test.

How to Apply for TAP

Applying for TAP is a straightforward process:

  1. Complete the FAFSA
Start by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This determines your eligibility for federal and state financial aid programs.
  2. Fill Out the TAP Application
Once your FAFSA is complete, New York residents will be directed to complete the TAP application via HESC’s website. The application requires information about your school and your family’s financial situation.
  3. Monitor Your Application Status
After submitting your TAP application, you’ll receive updates through your HESC account. Keep an eye on your email for any requests for additional information or documents.

Important Deadlines

For the 2025–206 academic year, the TAP application opens alongside the FAFSA on December 1, 2024. You will have to complete the application by June 30th, 2025.

Navigating the financial aid process can be overwhelming, but programs like NYS TAP make higher education more accessible and affordable for New York families. Whether you’re just starting your college journey or returning to school, TAP can be a game-changer in reducing tuition burdens.
